Story of Love – Rebekah and Isaac
Devotional done by Ess-Jee from standforyourmarriage.org
For many, this weekend is one of the most terrifying weekends of all, why? Well Sunday is Valentines Day and in the world we live in many people are preparing something special for someone or buying something etc. I know of many people who feels abandoned or lost because of divorce, separation or adultery that struck them and their families. I will try to show you that there is always hope for you even when everything is over, it’s not over. This week I asked the Lord to share something special with me so that I can share it with you. All of you know the deep love I have for the story of Hosea and Gomer and how God used Hosea and Gomer’s marriage to show the nation the Love He has for them. Hosea loved his wife unconditionally, and it didn’t matter to him what she has done, all what mattered to him was that she will come to her senses and see all she really needs is waiting for her at home. Hosea demonstrated this love for his wife not giving into worldly standards, or looking for someone else, he stood by his promise he made to God and his wife, to stand by her, for better and worse, richer and poorer, in sickness and in health, till DEATH DO US PART. That is what the Lord want from every husband and wife to stand for your spouse no matter what. HATE THE SIN BUT LOVE THE SINNER.
What the world are proclaiming right now, is that LOVE is feelings. If you don’t feel love you don’t have love, a pastor in my local church once said that the enemy uses one music tone and that is, how do you feel now , how do you feel now, over and over and over. Feelings comes and goes, one day you will feel you are ready to climb a mountain and the next day you would feel that you just want to stay in bed. Most relationship problems or marriage problems arise because we don’t have a real reference of what Love really is. When we think we love someone and suddenly I don’t feel love for that person, then we decide to get a divorce and look for someone else that can let me feel good again. The best love story to illustrate what I mean is the Love story between Rebekah and Isaac.
Isaac and Rebekah came together in a very traditional way. Abraham, the ancestor of the people of Israel , had left his old homeland at God’s command and moved into the area of present day Israel/Palestine, probably around 1500 BC. Abraham wants Isaac to marry a woman from ‘the old country’ and from his own tribe. So he sends his oldest servant and closest confidant as an ambassador to his tribal relatives to pave the way for the marriage of his son. The servant has the difficult task of finding a good, beautiful and pure young woman.
On the long journey to the homeland, the servant thinks out the criteria: she must be hospitable, accommodating, polite and perceptive. First impressions will be decisive. He will recognize the right one by how she behaves towards him and his camels. Abraham’s servant stops at a well. This was the information center of the time. People met while fetching water and it was where recent news was exchanged, births and deaths announced, and marriage plans initiated. As it happens the servant actually does meet a young woman, Rebekah, who satisfies all his criteria. Later, in the family tent, it becomes clear that he’s not only happened to find the right woman but also the right tribe. Anybody reading this story can see that God has a hand in this arranged marriage. God does not leave the marriage of Abraham’s son to chance. After all it affects the destiny of his chosen people. The couple who had never previously met came to love one another. This is a remarkable detail at the end of the story because feelings rarely play any part in an arranged marriage.
Love is not a feeling, love is something deeper something bigger than we can ever describe. Love comes from our creator, He is Love.
1 John 4:8
1 John 4:18
The best example we can use for love is using the example of Jesus Christ. He died for our sins, He was blameless and without any sin. The Father loved us so much that He send His only son to die for us. Have you ever taken a moment and thought this through, the Creator of the Universe choose to send a part of Himself to die for us, WOW what love. Jesus said in the Bible that the same attitude that is in Him we must also have..
1 John 3:16
The Lord showed me this scripture in a different way:
This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our husbands or wife’s.
Agape love is IN OTHER WORDS True Love, love is a choice and you choice everyday to love or not. If your alone this weekend cry out to the Lord, give Him all your pain and ashes, He will give you His joy and peace. Forgive anybody who has hurt, or mistreated you, lay them down at the feet of our Lord God. Ask the Lord to teach you how to love, how to really love Gods way and not the worlds way. If you have someone at your side this weekend, thank God for them and don’t take them for granted, ask the Lord to even deepen your love for each other.
May the Lords love abound in you always. Love never fails....And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
