 Hosea and Gomer

Devotional done by Ess-Jee from standforyourmarriage.org

Hosea 3

3:1 The Lord said to me, “Go, show love to your wife again, even though she loves another man and continually commits adultery. Likewise, the Lord loves the Israelites although they turn to other gods and love to offer raisin cakes to idols.” 3:2 So I paid fifteen shekels of silver and about seven bushels of barley to purchase her. 3:3 Then I told her, “You must live with me many days; you must not commit adultery or  have sexual intercourse with another man, and I also will wait for you.” 3:4 For the Israelites11 must live

many days without a king or prince, without sacrifice or sacred fertility pillar, without ephod or idols. 3:5

Afterward, the Israelites will turn and seek the Lord their God and their Davidic king. Then they will submit to the Lord in fear and receive his blessings in the future.

Its so amazing to me that everything that happens in the natural always have some kind of an effect in the spiritual or the other away around. Through out the bible The Lord tried to show us in many relationships how He love us and how we were suppose to love others , sometimes I think that  how did our generation got so loveless and only seeking our own shellfishes ambitions and desires, what happen? Were did we lose track of what God wanted from us or were are God’s standard?

Well as I studied Hosea chapters 1 to 3 I’ve discovered that in that time the nation around Hosea was not so very different as the one we live in today. The people had no shame , the sexual morals went out the window and Gods people didn’t care of living in holiness but life in the darkness of evil men. You can think in the society were living today how people will react if we start to Stand Up for God standards, and started to live the life God wants us to life.

Hosea was a good man; he had a big ministry for God and had a great vision for the Gospel. The prophetic ministry of Hosea is dated according to the first verse of the book. The reigns of the listed kings extended from 792 B.C. until 686 B.C.Hosea’s ministry probably began sometime after the first date and ended before the last king died. Both he and Jonah’s prophecies date sometime during the 8th century B.C., but

Hosea’s seemed to have extended later.Jonah was from the northern kingdom while Hosea lived in the southern kingdom, called Judah.

James Montgomery Boice refers to the book of Hosea as the “second greatest story in the Bible” after that of Jesus. Consider that as you read. As I read through chapter one I’ve discovered that the Lord wanted to use Hosea to show the people how deep His love was for them, it didn’t mean that God liked what they were doing but He wanted to show them that if you repent and stop sinning that He”s grace and goodness will overflow in There life’s. So the Lord requested Hosea that he must marry Gomer, the daughter of Diblaim.

Hosea 1:2-3

1:2 When the Lord first spoke7 through8 Hosea, he9 said to him,10 “Go marry11 a prostitute12 who will bear illegitimate children conceived through prostitution,13 because the nation14 continually commits spiritual prostitution15 by turning away from16 the Lord.” 1:3 So Hosea married17 Gomer, the daughter of Diblaim.

Already early in the Book Hosea the Lord wanted to show the nation of Israel His every deepening love He had for them. I could have think what went through Hosea”s mind when the Lord requested Him to marry this prostitute, sjo this was not, as I will say “ligte musiek nie”. Hosea married Gomer and as you read through Hosea it seemed like they were falling in love and was very Happy, the Lord blessed there relationship and the 1st thew years was great. But like many marriage today they lost focus of the Lord and  without Hosea noticing His loving wife was falling away from Him and the Lord bit by bit, backsliding one day at a time.

The poor man didn’t know what to do, as he went to work each and every day this image of His wife suffering inside haunted Him and because His ministry was growing he didn’t spend enough time with his beloved wife .Is that not the same today, how many marriages go down the rabbit hole just because we didn’t have the right knowledge to handle the situation.

Hosea 4:6 (King James Version)

My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.

So Hosea situation got so bad that Gomer slipped back into her old sinful lifestyle, and at that point Gomer felt like soap for Hosea in the sense that He was powerless. One day Gomer told Him she’s leaving Him for good and there is nothing He or His God can do to stop her, he was devastated because He still loved her no matter what she had done to hurt him. So Gomer went from one lover to another and lived out her dreams in the world, trying to forget her loving husband and her heavenly father.

But the Lord had a plan, a plan what will shock society, a plan what will rock the foundation of the divorce courts, a plan that will show the world that nothing can stand against His unfailing love. The Lord instructed Hosea that he must stand for His marriage, and start praying for her and forgiving her from all she has done to Him, Hosea accepted Gods request and the Lord started to work on Hosea “s heart, building His love into Hosea”s Heart.

Hosea 2:6

2:6 Therefore, I will soon25 fence her in26 with thorns; I will wall her in27 so that28 she cannot find her way.292:7 Then she will pursue her lovers, but she will not catch30 them; she will seek them, but she will not find them.31 Then she will say,“I will go back32 to my husband,33 because I was better off then than I am now.”34

Hosea got this promise from God and thanked God for His Marriage restored in the coming future. Well as time went on Gomer got worse, there were roomers that Her lovers has left her and she got to a point were she was stripped away from everything she thought came from God, soon realizing she made a horrible mistake. As the story went on people said to them self’s that “oo He will not take her back now, who would want her now  after all she has done, look what she has become, surely Hosea will go on with his life now”. Well dear reader the Lord deepened His love for her that it didn’t matter to him how she looked or what she did to Him all that matter to Him was to get His wife back to the loving arms of God and back at His side as his wife.

3:3 Then I told her, “You must live with me many days; you must not commit adultery or have sexual intercourse with another man, and I also will wait for you.” 3:4 For the Israelites11 must live many days without a king or prince, without sacrifice or sacred fertility pillar, without ephod or idols. 3:5 Afterward, the Israelites will turn and seek the Lord their God and their Davidic king. Then they will submit to the Lord in fear and receive his blessings in the future.

So Hosea bought her back and in time she was restored to His wife, how wonderful. So I pray that every one of us will ask God to in plant His love in us, a love  this world will have never experienced before, a love that what is unfailing.

Lord Jesus, thank you for our family, thank you for your unfailing love for us, dear father I pray that every reader reading this devotional will experience Your love like Hosea did so many-many years ago, may we Glorify you in everything you do, Lord I pray that you will give every Stander the strength and peace in this Christmas season, may there be a mighty harvest of souls  for you repenting  and turning back to you and going back to there waiting husbands or wifes, thank you Lord for all the families restored in the coming days, you will get all the honour and Glory in Jesus name I pray Amen.

I want to dedicate this devotional to my Loving Wife, and to all other prodigals around the world.

All the Glory to God forever and ever
